The New Middle Class Job Area

For the later part of the 20th century, manufacturing was a large part of the middle class employment picture. With the rise of technology and globalization, those jobs either disappeared or were moved to countries with lower cost work forces.
This author believes that the new middle class jobs area will be in computer programming. It is projected that the need for programmers will increase over the next 10 years.[1]
Just like auto-shop and other shop classes prepared a couple of generations of students for manufacturing, today's computer programming classes and robotics clubs can prepare this and future generations students for programming and other areas of technology.
Programming has low barrier to entry. Anyone with a computer can get started by learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript using just their favorite web browser and make their own custom home page with pictures and links to websites. Java, C/C++, Python, and other popular languages have easy to use Integrated Development Environment (IDE) applications with a wide selection of tutorials and examples. There are numerous web sites that teach how to program and many universities have free online courses.
There are also several support areas to programming such as icon design for mobile apps and graphical user interface (GUI) design that will need people.
Programming can be done at just about any age, by any gender, and within any lifestyle. The only real barrier to entry is the mindset of the individual.
